Your Work Doesn’t Define You

Your worth and identity go way beyond what you do for your occupation. It’s just a part of who you are, and by no means does it define you solely. If you lose your job, then you don’t stop being you. You still have so much to offer the world.

This Is Only The Beginning

Try not to think of it as the end. Sure, it’s an end to a chapter, but it’s also the start of a new one. The opportunity for a new beginning. I know it’s difficult to be optimistic when you’ve lost your job, but as one door closes, another one opens. You will find something else.

Try Not To Make The Same Mistakes

If you saw the termination of your job coming, then you may already be aware of why it happened. Being fired forces you to reflect on where you potentially went wrong so that you know not to make those same mistakes again in your next role.

Take Responsibility

Swallowing your pride can sometimes be tough, but if you know where you messed up then you’ve just got to accept it, learn from it, and move on. Take responsibility for your actions and use it as an opportunity to grow. It’s not easy, but know that this feeling is only temporary.

Firing Isn’t Fun For Anyone Involved

While you may think the person firing you is a cold-hearted, soulless monster, chances are they aren’t enjoying the situation either. It’s awkward and uncomfortable for anyone involved, and they no doubt want it to be over as much as you do. At the end of the day, they’re human, too.

Be Open To New Opportunities

You’ve been put into a situation that was ultimately out of your hands, and your vision for the future has somehow been switched on its head. Grasp this opportunity to do something new that’s better suited to you. While it can be a scary time, it can also be exciting.

Be Better Prepared

One thing I have learned since being fired is to be better prepared for literally anything. That’s not to say you should live your life constantly expecting something awful to happen, which, in this case, is being fired, however, be on guard and defend yourself if needs be.

Life Always Happens

If you can count on anything, count on life always throwing you a curveball when you least expect it. We never know what’s around the corner, and sometimes we can’t avoid it. Just accept that it is what it is, and this job wasn’t meant for you.

Try Not To Dwell Too Much

Listen, I’ve been there. The thought of bills not getting paid and not being able to afford food is scary. I understand that and I feel you. But you simply cannot give up and succumb to the negative thoughts. Keep pushing forward. I know it’s hard but it will get better if you put the right energy into making it work.

Don’t Beat Yourself Up

Your feelings of disappointment and sadness are valid but don’t tear yourself apart over this. Be kind to yourself as you would be to a friend or a loved one going through the same situation. It’s already a rough time as it is, so treat yourself with compassion and take the time you need to heal, if you need it.

You Can Survive Being Fired

You absolutely can survive being fired. I know it sucks, but you’ve got this. Nothing teaches you resilience like losing your job, trust me. At some point in the future, you’ll look back on this as a minor blip in your career, and perhaps with gratitude.

The Best Is Yet To Come

And last but not least, being fired could be the kick up your backside that you need. I know it doesn’t feel like it right now, but this could be the best thing that’s ever happened to you. What is it you want out of life? What are your goals? Now could be the time to live them out instead of just daydreaming.

Know What You Don’t Want

This is not always the case, but looking back, you may probably realize that you did not like the job as much as you previously thought. If you got fired, chances are you weren’t doing a great job because you were not stimulated enough. What didn’t you like about your last job? Figuring this out is fundamental to finding a better job position in the next few months.

Time For Yourself

This can also be a great opportunity to devote some time to yourself. Most people are overworked, so chances are this was your case, too. Take a trip to Europe, visit old friends you haven’t seen in ages, or simply spend a few days relaxing from your home before applying for new job opportunities.

Take Advantage Of Your Benefits

Even though you were fired, you may still be entitled to certain benefits in your contract. You may get your unused vacation time paid out, or you may qualify for unemployment benefits as well. Take a good hard look at your contract and also the government programs you may now be eligible for. You may get a lot more than you expect!

I Became a Better Employee

If you get fired, your employer will likely tell you why. While it may be hard to hear the reason why you were fired, especially if it is a criticism of your work abilities, it is invaluable information. You can use this experience to better yourself in your next job and be successful in your next adventure. Be positive, accept the reasons, and then move on. That is exactly what I did and I am a much better employee and worker for it.
