16 Real Stories of Women Who Rejected a Marriage Proposal
A man gets down on one knee and asks a woman to marry him; she says yes, and they live happily ever after. The end. That is not at all how most marriage proposals go. In fact, women who say “no” to marriage proposals can have very strong reasons. We took to Reddit to find the most common reasons marriage rejections happened. Take a look at why these women said “no” to the ring.
Not For The Right Reasons

Several ladies rejected proposals because they didn’t feel it was for the right reason. User LeonProfessional explained, “A friend of mine was rejected when he proposed to his girlfriend. She was pregnant with his kid and she felt that he was only proposing because of the baby, not because of their relationship.”
Well, that’s a good reason. You want to make sure they’re truly there for you.
He Was Drunk

One Redditor turned down a proposal because they were both 19, and he proposed to her while he was drunk. The user explained that she didn’t feel it was a smart move.
Somehow, this didn’t stop the guy from proposing to someone else. He married her a month after the proposal, so he seemed more serious than one would think.
It Was A “Green Card” Proposal

User incognitaX explained that she once got a marriage proposal from a man who wanted a Green Card. She turned it down for obvious reasons.
Oddly enough, this user had a second rejected proposal story.
She turned down another man who proposed early in the relationship. He proposed again, and incognitaX has been with her husband for over two decades. What a happy ending!
She Just Didn’t Know Him Well

A common theme that keeps popping up on rejected proposals is not knowing the man for a long enough time. Most of the time, these rejections happen because the guy would propose before the six-month mark.
User MarlanaS explained, “I was really surprised and said yes, but then after thinking about it for a few weeks, I told him I couldn’t do it, and we broke up. I just wasn’t ready to get married, and we really didn’t know each other that well.”
The moral of the story? Take your time when it comes to proposing.
He Was Mentally Ill

Some of the most alarming posts involve proposals from unhinged guys who were delusional. One poor Reddit user got proposed to by a boy in her class who believed she was his soul mate.
When she declined, he threatened to kill himself. He eventually was committed to a psychiatric hold and has been in jail since then.
It Was Just Really Bizarre

This story is the true depiction of “hot and cold.” User Cerealcomma explained she turned down a proposal because her boyfriend hadn’t spoken to her in months, except for the week before the proposal.
She said, “It was simply a ridiculous suggestion.”
He Jumped The Gun

Some of the proposal stories out there were scary. One Reddit user named bearsdiscoverfire explained that she went on a date with a guy who laid out his entire life plan for her. The problem is, he had no idea what she wanted to do with her life…nor did he care!
He was pretty bewildered by her objections. She added, “He broke up with me shortly after, citing my supposed inability to be a ‘reasonable, rational person’ in light of my rejection of his unilateral propositions.”
The Relationship Was Already Over

Did you ever see a man propose to keep a girl from leaving him? It’s a legitimate phenomenon, often done by men who are future fake or men who don’t actually want to improve themselves.
When this user’s boyfriend dumped her, she accepted it. He realized she was ready to walk away, he went out and proposed. She added, “Really pissed me off. I actually responded with ‘I have a date this weekend’. I guess that was a little harsh, but don’t propose out of desperation because you screwed up.”
Red Lobster

Some of these proposals are just too hilariously bad to ignore. User clayfeet604 was proposed to by a casual fling who she’s fairly certain had someone else on the side. This was a shock enough for her to see, but it got worse.
The proposal was done at a Red Lobster. At 4 PM. Why? No one might ever know. Unfortunately, there was no update on whether they got any of those delicious cheese biscuits for free as a result of the proposal.
Deja Vu!

One Redditor told a story about their coworker and why she recently rejected a proposal. The man who proposed to her was her ex-husband, and they had just finalized their divorce two months prior!
It’s not for nothing that they already tried to get married. It didn’t work out, so now would not be a good time to try again.
Mother’s Alert

We often hear that to know how a man will treat you in the long run; you must check his relationship with his mother. This is exactly what Reddit user NotMyRealName814 did. Unfortunately, her partner and his father seemed to be often disrespectful towards the woman, so she decided to say ‘no’ to a wedding.
Different Stages of Life

Age gaps are often frowned upon. While this is not always the case, sometimes there are good reasons for it, as the two people involved are at completely different stages of life, and a long-term relationship would probably never work. This was the case of Reddit user Jepuh, who was only 19 when his 29-year-old partner, who had a young child and financial problems, suddenly proposed.
On Again, Off Again

Lots of Reddit users have talked about dismissing a proposal since the relationship has already been too turbulent. One user talked about the tearful proposal she received from a man she had been dating on and off. They were currently “off” when he begged her to get married. She said no and then found out a month later that he had gotten a different girl pregnant. It looks like she made the right call!
He Was Already Married

Now this one sounds outrageous. JLesh13 describes a man at her office who proposed several times and even had a ring for her. However, he was already married when he proposed. Apparently, he went on to get divorced and continued to ask her to marry him, but she had no interest at all. She was more of a challenge that he wanted to accomplish rather than a true love. That doesn’t sound romantic at all.
Complete Embarrassment

He thought performing a dance in front of in front of the whole school and then proposing was a good idea. In fact, it was terribly wrong. While this Reddit user performed an intricate dance around his love, she decided to simply walk away. Maybe she was embarrassed, maybe she was too young, or maybe she thought his dancing was awful, we may never know. But all the Reddit users sure did want to speculate!
