Issues like high violent crime rates, sky-high housing costs, low quality of life, and poor environmental conditions can make daily life challenging. Based on these factors, here’s a list of some of the toughest cities to call home in America. You may want to think twice before moving to one of these spots.

24/7 Wall Street created an index of the 10 worst cities in the U.S. based on factors such as economy, affordability, quality of life, and community. The cities facing the most significant challenges across these key areas were identified, offering insights into the factors that might negatively influence living conditions in these cities. Only the top city with a population of over 8,000 from each state was considered to avoid geographic clustering.
Mendota, CA
Although California is considered one of the best states to live in, Mendota is skewing the curve. Mendota has some of the highest rates of unemployment and is traversing on the poverty line. The population of Mendota is only 12,589 as of 2024, and the majority live in poverty. Sadly, Mendota’s struggles don’t end here. The city has sparse educational opportunities, and those available are of low quality. It’s also one of the least financially secure cities, with a high dependency on agriculture and a proneness to ups and downs.
Florida City, FL
Living in Florida City is one of the most challenging experiences because residents are more likely to encounter criminals and become victims of crime. Its high violent crime rate makes it a less-than-desirable city. Florida City also struggles with economic stability. The city has some of the lowest employment rates in the country and lacks opportunities. It is also vulnerable to natural disasters such as hurricanes, which significantly affect its livability.
California City, CA
Moving to California might be a dream for some, but living in the city is incredibly disappointing. California city has sparse amenities and facilities, drastically lowering living standards and directly affecting lifestyle. The city’s job market is highly saturated, with little room for newer opportunities. Its low employment rate, poor living wage, and area remoteness make California City one of the worst in the U.S.
Makaha, HI
Hawaii is considered one of the best states to live in, but Makaha is seriously impeding its growth. Since the state encourages high living standards, Makahan residents require equal opportunities and amenities but lack access. Most Makaha residents sit close to the poverty line because they can’t afford basic facilities and lack access to healthcare. They are pretty isolated from urbanization, which limits their access to resources and infrastructure.
Highland Park, MI
Highland Park was once one of the greatest cities in Michigan, but consistent economic decline has drastically affected its quality of life. The median household income is $30,341, which is on the lower side to survive comfortably in today’s fast-paced world. Everything has become expensive, making it out of reach for middle-class and lower-middle-class families. In fact, 37.58% of the city’s residents live below the poverty line.
Bessemer, AL
Bessemer, among many Alabaman cities, has experienced a dramatic shift in economic stability. The city’s decline in manufacturing has created gaps in employment, leading to poor economic conditions. Bessemer also has some of the highest poverty rates in the United States, which mars its desirability. The city lacks quality educational resources, pushing youngsters to less desirable jobs.
Bastrop, LA
It’s strikingly apparent that Bastrop is experiencing a decline in quality of life, a situation that can be directly attributed to economic disparity and a shortage of quality employment opportunities. Unfortunately, this city bears the burden of some of the highest poverty rates in the state. The lack of economic diversity and limited access to well-paying jobs further exacerbate these issues, creating a cycle that’s hard to break.
Waianae, HI
Hawaii’s penchant for a high standard of living has directly affected cities like Waianae, where poor resources and lack of access to financially prosperous opportunities have made it difficult for most residents to survive. Waianae’s serene setting leaves little room for working opportunities, and the sparsely available opportunities provide stability. The city also has some of the highest crime rates in the state.
Anniston, AL
Anniston was once considered one of the most dangerous cities because of a contamination incident that drastically affected the lives and livelihoods of the people living there. Sadly, Anniston has done little to improve its condition. The city offers some of the least promising opportunities in Alabama, leading to a rapid economic decline that’s only getting worse. Also, the city’s high crime rate of 3,434 violent crimes per 100,000 people makes it quite undesirable.
Avenal, CA
Avenal rarely makes the list of desirable cities because it lacks opportunities and has limited access to essential resources. Most young Avenal citizens move to other parts of California for a better quality of life. One of the reasons behind this lack of appeal is Avenal’s remoteness, which makes it difficult for residents to access better amenities. The city also faces a crumbling environment, which looms over citizen’s lives.
Don’t move to these cities
While some of these cities are good for visiting, if you really need to, moving to any of them is definitely not a good idea. Do your due diligence and research if you are planning to live in any of these worst cities in the U.S. Consider factors like job opportunities, cost of living, safety, and quality of life before making such a significant decision.
