Sleeping On The Tummy

Babies should never sleep on their tummies. Why? This position may lead to the so-called Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, often abbreviated as SIDS. This is because your baby may rest his nose or mouth on a surface providing little or no ventilation and may, therefore, be breathing his/her own carbon dioxide repeatedly. This is why you should always check your baby is resting on his/her back.

Sleeping Together

So many new parents are tempted to sleep with their babies, but this can be incredibly dangerous. Always remember that you do not control your body when you sleep. This means that you may roll over your baby or that your newborn may get stuck between the blankets and pillow. Always ensure your baby sleeps in his/her bed to avoid emergencies.

Physical Punishment

Unfortunately, plenty of parents worldwide still physically punish their children because they believe this is a good way to educate them. This is not the case. Smacking your newborn will have detrimental effects. For instance, your baby may start trusting you less, and you may even notice a lack of motivation to explore. Paradoxically, this often causes more misbehaviors!

Ignore Cries

We all know that babies cannot speak. One of their only ways of communicating with adults, including mommy and daddy, is by crying. Letting them cry without checking on them may lead to higher stress levels and hamper your newborn’s brain development. Plus, it will make him/her feel neglected. In other words, always check your baby whenever you hear cries and try to figure out what the cause is.

Pacifiers

Pacifiers may be interesting objects to new parents as they can satisfy a baby’s need to suck. However, these are not always the best idea. Why? Babies cannot distinguish between a pacifier and a nipple, meaning these objects may confuse your newborn baby. Giving your baby a pacifier may lead to issues with latching, so ensure you wait at least two months before giving one to your child.

Too Many Clothes

Every mum has worried that her newborn baby may be cold at least once. This is why we often see babies dressed in several layers of clothes. Even though your newborn might seem cold, there is a simple rule to follow in these cases. Dress your baby exactly as you are dressed. Piling on clothes can have negative consequences, leading to overheating your baby, so try to avoid this.

Ignoring Gums Health

Even though newborns don’t have teeth, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t care about his/her mouth health. How? For instance, by regularly cleaning his/her gums. You can do so by using a clean and damp washcloth or gauze. You can wipe your baby’s gums after feeding him/her to ensure he/she will grow up with strong gums and be ready to welcome the first teeth!

Cow’s Milk

While babies’ stomachs are developed to welcome and make the most of their mother’s milk, the same cannot be said for all types of milk. This is why you must avoid cow’s milk or any other type of liquid, including juice and even water! Talk to your doctor in case of doubts, but in general, be extra careful before feeding anything other than your own milk to babies.

Alone Time

While some parents may think leaving kids alone is a great way to teach them independence, there is a time for everything. If you have a newborn at home, it is probably too early for you to teach him/her this skill. Leaving a young baby alone for a long period of time can be highly stressful and may lead to fear. So ensure you or your partner are always nearby.

Not Changing Diapers When Needed

If this is your first kid, you will be surprised by how often you will have to change his/her diaper. Some parents may be tempted to leave it there longer, for instance, until it’s soaked or heavy, to save money and time. However, this is highly unsanitary and can be extremely uncomfortable for your little one. Always replace diapers when needed!

Affection From Everyone

Initially, everyone will want to kiss and cuddle your newborn baby. Relatives, friends, colleagues… the list goes on and on. Unfortunately, this may hurt your baby as your newborn’s immune system is still incredibly weak during the first weeks after birth. Ask everyone to wash their hands before holding your kid, and stay alert when someone visits.

No Supervision When Bathing

Water can be dangerous at all ages, as plenty of people die at sea every year. However, this element is particularly dangerous for newborn babies who must still master swimming. This is why you should never leave your kid alone in the proximity of water, as drowning is, unfortunately, a risk. Always be around your kid when heading to the sea, swimming pool, and even when bathing!

Sleeping With Stuffed Toys

Letting your baby sleep with stuffed toys might seem harmless or even comforting, but it’s a major safety hazard. Soft toys can increase the risk of suffocation or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), especially for infants under 12 months old. A crib should be free of any loose objects, including stuffed animals, pillows, and blankets, to create a safe sleeping environment. If you want to give your baby a little extra comfort, consider opting for wearable blankets or sleep sacks to keep your little one cozy without the risks.

Alone Time with a Pet

While your furry friend might be a beloved part of the family, leaving a baby alone with a pet is a mistake that could lead to serious accidents. Even the gentlest pet can become unpredictable due to curiosity, jealousy, or misunderstanding a baby’s movements or noises. Always supervise interactions between pets and young children to ensure safety for both.
