16 Countries That Are Too Dangerous to Travel to Alone

Going on a solo trip can be an incredibly empowering and spiritual journey, offering you the chance to explore the world while discovering more about yourself. But not every destination is ideal for going it alone. IThe countries on this list can pose serious risks for your safety, especially if you are a solo traveler. So, while you should absolutely embrace the adventure of a solo trip, make sure to steer clear of these places. After all, the goal is to create amazing memories and make it back home safe and sound!

Afghanistan

The situation in Afghanistan for women remains critical. Girls here are prohibited from getting an education by law and lack the most basic rights. The Taliban authorities asked women to cover up their bodies entirely and banned them from certain public spaces. According to data from the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, over 12 million women living in this country are now in need of humanitarian assistance. 

South Sudan

South Sudan remains to this day one of the most dangerous countries in the world, with sexual violence now starting to be used as a weapon of war, putting women even more at risk.  Located in East Africa, this country has diverse ecosystems, including lush savannas, rainforests, and swampland that – hopefully – visitors will be able to explore again one day.

Libya

Libya is considered one of the most dangerous countries in Africa. With an internationally recognized government based in Tripoli and a separately administered region in the east, political instability in this country is incredibly high. On top of this, women in Libya lack basic rights. For instance, women are now requested to complete a detailed form stating the reasons for their trips whenever traveling without a male escort. 

Yemen

Yemen is now experiencing a war between a Saudi and UAE-led coalition and Houthi armed groups. Plenty of civilians are currently in urgent need of food while humanitarian aid is being blocked. This country, located in the southern Arabian Peninsula, bordering Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the Indian Ocean. Despite its rich history and magnificent architecture, travelers are advised against all non-necessary trips to this country.

Haiti

The situation in Haiti is getting worse and worse, with local gangs constantly kidnapping and killing civilians. Thousands of people have already died because of these conflicts, and the numbers keep increasing. Officially known as the Republic of Haiti, this once beautiful land is located on the island of Hispaniola, west of territories occupied by the Dominican Republic.

Israel and Palestine

Since the Re’im music festival massacre that took place on October 7th, 2023, these territories have been continuously at war. With death tolls rising every day on both sides, this is now one of the most dangerous places in the world. Before the current situation, Israel had a thriving tourism industry, with hundreds of thousands of people visiting cities such as Jerusalem every year.

Iran

Despite the famous Mahsa Amini protests, which started after the death of a 22-year-old Iranian woman who was in police custody, Iran still remains largely unsafe for women. The simple fact that all females here are required to wear the hijab by law says a lot about the conditions in which young girls and adult women have to live in the country. If you were wondering, tourists here are also required to wear the hijab.

Congo

Unfortunately, the situation in Congo remains highly unstable, meaning that trips to this country should be avoided when possible. The country is now experiencing a conflict between the Congolese armed forces and the M23 rebel group, which has caused dozens of people to die since the beginning of the year. Thousands of civilians were also forced to flee their homes, with estimations showing that over 1 million women have been already raped.

Ukraine

Since the beginning of the war in February 2022, the eastern part of Ukraine become the setting of violent conflicts. Traveling to Ukraine at the moment is highly not recommended due to the daily air raids from Russia. Before the beginning of the war, tourists often headed to Kiyev or visited the neighbouring magnificent cities such as Lviv.

Mali

Despite the beautiful tourist sites found here, women should avoid this country for their safety. Attacks by both the state security forces and terrorist groups are unfortunately frequent, with reports of foreign soldiers raping local women during counterterrorism operations. Mali is a landlocked country in West Africa and is home to the beautiful Timbuktu, featuring one of the oldest universities in the world.

Myanmar

Unfortunately, conflicts continue in Myanmar between the Arakan Army and forces loyal to the ruling junta. The regular use of weapons is posing a risk to all civilians. Also known as Burma, this country is located in Southeast Asia and borders Bangladesh, India, China, Laos, and Thailand. Before these conflicts began, tourists visited this country to explore cities such as Yangon and Mandalay.

Central African Republic

This African country has experienced continuous instability since its independence from France in 1960. Women here have a life expectancy of only 57 years, and brutal practices such as forced marriages and female genital mutilation still persist to this day. As the name suggests, the Central African Republic is located in the heart of Africa and borders Chad, Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Cameroon.

Syria

Syria remains largely dangerous despite being home to ancient cities such as Damascus and Aleppo. Political instability has characterized this country for over a decade now, leading to a severe humanitarian crisis. The Syrian regime is also responsible for the disappearance and incarceration of plenty of innocent people throughout the country.

Somalia

Located in Eastern Africa, the small country of Somalia remains a dangerous destination due to several terrorist attacks that characterized these lands in recent years. For instance, Laascaanood has long been disputed between Somaliland and Puntland. These conflicts are, unfortunately, responsible for plenty of civilian casualties, including both deaths and injuries.

Sudan

Just like its neighbor, South Sudan, Sudan is, to this day, one of the most dangerous countries in the world. Civilians are constantly facing violence and killings by both the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Health workers cannot provide all the necessary assistance, making this one of the worst destinations for solo travelers.  

Venezuela

Venezuela is known for its breathtaking natural beauty, vibrant cities, and rich cultural heritage. However, the high levels of crime make it a place that you may not want to visit alone. From constant robberies to violent assaults, crime in Venezuela has skyrocketed as the country faces severe economic instability and unreliable services. Political unrest and corruption also make it difficult for travelers and tourists to feel safe. Skip the trip to Venezuela for now and plan to go somewhere safer and more stable.
